Intense research in the U.S. has concluded that current legislation for prostitution sends pimps and prostitutes onto the streets. The Police Force policy seemingly lowers the standard of life in the neighbourhoods and forces the local residents to put up with the dark business street soliciting. It goes without saying that the biggest dilemma with this is that prostitutes are putting their selves in a lot of danger. Prostitutes are easy targets for sex attackers and serial killers etc. Specialists say street prostitutes are main targets of serial killers. One answer to this dilemma could be to copy some European cities such as Berlin or Prague. There brothels are completely legal and designated a specialized part of town. This helps to minimise street crime. Of course most significantly, prostitutes do expose themselves to much less danger then street prostitutes. Street soliciting is notorious for its problems with drug addiction and it is used to finance the habits of women. This is mostly as a result of getting convicted at an early age for soliciting and employment can seem impossible from then on. Or they become addicted at an early age as a result of their upbringing or the ways of their neighbourhood. With soliciting being illegal, crooks like muggers or sex attackers view street girls as easy targets to commit their crimes. Working girls are much less likely to record any crime because they may implicate their selves and they are easily taken advantage of. With the legality of prostitution these women would be less reluctant to report any crimes as they would their selves be acting within the law. And as a result, more criminals would get arrested for their crimes. This would help eliminate the safe havens where the crooks prowl by moving the game off of the streets. Just look at Amsterdam for example. Though its not perfect. It is much more effective then the U.S. policy. In Nevada State, soliciting is legal and after studying, sociologists found that it helped to massively reduce street crime. If this is true, then there is no reason to continue criminalising brothels and prostitution. When poor people are attempting to make a living in order to keep a roof over their heads, soliciting can save them from absolute desperation. Often it may be the one and only way to prevent the loss of houses and, or their property and items. Up at the other end of the scale, you have prostitutes who live fairly comfortable lives but work as prostitutes as they like meeting people. Some will have improved lives on the cash they get doing so. When you bear all these facts in mind, it doesn’t make sense why it should be outlawed. For the majority of people who use prostitutes, they’re law abiding people and extremely friendly. Many of them struggle to get a relationship or they have had bad luck with a previous relationship. So in the end. The point that I’m trying to make is that if the police and government concentrated on the more dangerous crimes instead of oppressing the brothel industry, the industry would be much safer, cleaner and virtually trouble free. If only they would legalise it and set out some workable guidelines. |
